Canyelles is one of the six municipalities that make up the Garraf region. This municipality borders the Alt Penedès region since it is located on the border of Garraf. In fact, years ago, the Canyelles stream connected the towns on the coast with those in the interior.
As far as its natural environment is concerned, it is strategically located between the Olèrdola Regional Park and the Garraf Natural Park.
Within its municipal area we find three small peaks; the Puig de Sant Miquel, Rodó i Puig de l’Àliga and the Puig Montgrós, which form a route that constitutes the balcony of a large part of the region. The Canyelles stream also runs through it, which is fed by the waters of different tributaries.
In Canyelles we can find the remains of the Canyelles castle, where you can see a part of the wall and a circular tower, dating from the 15th century, and which is property of the Bouffard family. It seems that before fulfilling this function it was a defense tower. The old town of Canyelles is located just behind the castle.
Near the castle we can visit the church of Santa Magdalena documented from the 17th century. This building was owned by the castle, hence its next location.
In 1861 an aerolite fell in this municipality, the remains that remained were distributed in different museums throughout the peninsula. Since that day Canyelles is known as ” the town of the meteorite.”
The residents of Casas Xum and Llacunalba and all the farmhouses that are scattered throughout the territory are also part of this nucleus, among them Can Sàbat and Can Faló stand out. All these constructions allow us to know and differentiate houses from different periods.
The first documents that exist where Canyelles appears as a town date from the year 992 when its limit bordered that of Viladellops.
